Destroying History

Man wakes up from dreaming he's a butterfly
Or is some butterfly dreaming it's me?
If I was born different I would breed children
Or tear up at the finals for the winning home team
History or God gave a bug a proboscis
So far from the Greek meaning cause to feed
I knelt in the grass to measure its progress
All I got for the effort was a stain on my jeans
Aphids and fleas
Swear that I can see it all curve from this angle
A farm is any square from thirty-thousand feet
Do passing geese derive shape from Euclid
-ean geometry?
A golden stone shining somewhere in some sunset
Turns black in the shadow of a bus or a tree
Back in the lab it's all grey under the microscope
So now we know the truth beyond all certainty
It's clear as day see?

Bitter Cup
02:27
|
|||
A crack in the concrete
A crack in the paint
I guess it's better than nothing
A child could not make
You talk like a checkbook
You've got eyes like a snake
I'm reading you like the carpet in The Shining
I said hey you look like a snake
Well I've seen it before
But since there where's it been?
Floating by like a river
Changing its course at a whim
Hand out many fishes
Standing so high on your hill
Was it just two that suffered
The taste of the kill the sour of the kill
Now you'll fill him up with better
And better better stuff
He will throw up that richness
Back into His bitter cup
Now you're playing fetch
With what's left of your limbs
The pet still loves its owner
As it devours what's left of him

Now I've lost my way in thought
It's time for giving up on pretty things
To pet a cat or mend a tear
While softly forming in the wings
Of hapless reaching I can't hand it off
Put spring back into hell
Unintelligibly exhale
"Cuando te veré" my friends again
Wash ebb and pile back up
Bucolic intertidal dish soap blue
A broken dial misleads the blazing
Recollections of warm June
So soon again and then it's gone
My happy heat kept underground
To germinate and grow and rot and grow
A dog a rug or a piece of land
Hunted like an antelope
My camo torched and I am trembling
Contend with fluid in my throat
Rings out all garbled when I sing
About some hateful hole in dirt
Here once a garden now just trees to fell
Pinned to the earth like hobbled mules
Swing burnished steel but never send
My absolution begs me
Burn the flowing sap to black pitch glue
My back grows straighter than an apes
So kill and shiver want and sue
Invent the TV set to watch gallons pour
Of goop so worked and ground
Words fall to paste gesticulate
Towards growing up congealed with the couch

Pig Ladder
02:54
|
|||
Looking at the stars
Clouds seem to pass just beneath them
And almost pass right through them
It's just a trick of the eyes
Listening to frogs sing
Beneath that bridge in Santa Clara
Right by the monument to Che Guevera
Martyr turned magnet in time
I wonder what's that kind of bird
All black and gathered in those cool trees
Can't tell if they have needles or leaves
Then one gets hit by a rock
Lying on the ground
Its little skull all caved in
What sort of person would
Commit such pointless sin
Showed me a replica sword
At the museum of Simón Bolívar
Do I a "communist" really want to live here?
Well I shouldn't forget
But I just go and drink more beer
And wade into the Atlantic
Think of you back on the Pacific
This one vast ocean is like we touch
Wish I could show you that bird
You'd say we're really not so different
To live is always some kind of violence
And that chaos sustains all life
So I turn away
Climb up my pig ladder
Turn away

To Get to You
01:56
|
|||
Everybody hustling
To the soda fountain guzzling
And I ain't got nothing to prove
And I ain't got nothing to do
But to think about you
I heard something on the station
Claiming white racial erasion
Guess there's always more to lose
What helps is some more booze
While I think about you
They announce the newest hardware
That will keep us at our armchairs
Oh and I'm gonna buy it too
There's always something new
Keeping me from you
When everybody's mustering
Cause of fire alarm mothering
Taught us how to move
In line with a buddy too
It used to be you
So do we go up in ashes
Planting bombs in all their caches?
I have not got a clue
But at least it's a route
To get to you
